Your guide to building a sustainable healthy lifestyle

I’m so glad you’re here! With each newsletter you will receive easily digestible tips regarding fitness, exercise, nutrition, meal prep, and much more!

A healthy lifestyle that produces lasting results is 100% possible, and my goal is to show you how you can achieve just that…it’s probably simpler than you think. I’m here to teach you that wellness doesn’t have to be complicated or boring. You can be excited about moving and fueling your body in ways that are sustainable for your unique journey.

So let’s dive in! Today’s topic covers tips for creating healthy habits. Wouldn’t it be so much easier if working out, meal prepping, eating nutritious food, etc. were all habits we did without thinking about it? While that may be a stretch (I mean, ya kinda have to think about these things at least a little), there are ways to incorporate healthy habits into your routine so they become part of the way you live. In other words, habits are the building blocks of your lifestyle. If your goal is to create a healthy lifestyle, you’ve got to start with healthy habits.

  • Start small – This is so important, especially if you’re in the beginning stages of a lifestyle overhaul. Trying to do all the things at once can be extremely challenging and is probably not the most effective approach. Try one new thing for at least a couple weeks before adding in another change.
Example : You want to start making all of your meals at home during the week. However, you’re used to eating out breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday. Instead of prepping both meals for each day, start with just one. Make your breakfast for each day and package it in a way that is convenient for you to grab when it’s time to eat. Once you get in a routine of making breakfast, add in lunch.
  • Add the desired habit to an existing one – Whether you realize it or not, you have many daily habits. When creating a new one, consider doing it either before or after something you’re already doing each day.
Example : You want to stretch for 15 minutes every day. You already begin your evening routine by brushing your teeth at 9:00 PM. To incorporate stretching, you could either begin your stretch routine at 8:45, or you could stretch for 15 minutes after brushing your teeth.
  • Find an accountability partner – Change can be challenging, but having someone make changes with you, or at least cheer you on, can make all the difference. Tell a trusted friend or family member your plan, and ask them to check in with you or to join you.
Example : Your goal is to workout for at least 30 minutes 4 days per week. Share this with your bestie, and ask them to text you each Saturday to ask how you did. Or message them each day you complete a workout. Knowing that someone else “sees” us can be a big motivator to follow through.

It’s often said that it takes 21 days to create a habit but 90 days to create a lifestyle. I do believe there’s some truth to that, but the main takeaway is that change takes time. Be patient with yourself when incorporating new habits. Don’t get discouraged if you miss a day (or several). Keep trying, and eventually – if you don’t quit – you’ll realize that healthy habit has become part of your lifestyle.

I hope these tips are helpful as you consider your next step in your wellness journey.
