So let’s dive in! Today’s topic is all about smart snacking.

If you find yourself needing a little something to munch on between meals, this is for you! First, let me say that snacking is a great option for your daily food intake. It can help keep you full between meals and is a good way to incorporate additional calories each day.

However, if you are trying to lose weight, it can be a sneaky way to add extra calories that exceed your daily goal. If you fall into this category, calorie tracking will come in handy to ensure you’re not consuming too much each day.

So if you’re going to snack, what should you be eating? Here are just a few things to consider when selecting a snack

  • Size – Pick a snack that is smaller than a regular meal but large enough to curb your hunger. I like to think of a snack size as about 1/3 of what I would eat for a meal.
  • Nutrition content – Focus on healthy fats and proteins as these will keep you full longer. If you’re enjoying a packaged snack, check the label to make sure there’s not a lot of added sugar. The daily recommended allowance is no more than 25 grams.
  • Source – The grocery store is full of prepackaged snacks, and the majority of these have little or no nutritional value. Instead of browsing the snack aisles, shop the perimeter of your grocer to select higher quality, whole food snacks.
