A healthy lifestyle that produces lasting results is 100% possible, and my goal is to show you how you can achieve just that…it’s probably simpler than you think. I’m here to teach you that wellness doesn’t have to be complicated or boring. You can be excited about moving and fueling your body in ways that are sustainable for your unique journey.
So let’s dive in! Do you want to create a healthy lifestyle but are unsure where to begin? While the wealth of information available at our fingertips can be helpful, it can also be very overwhelming. Consider these tips to help you get started.
- Determine your “why” : Before beginning a lifestyle change, ask yourself why you want to make the change in the first place. I know this may not feel like a proactive step, but it is actually very important. Knowing why you’re doing something will help you keep going on the days you don’t feel like it. The novelty of a new thing wears off very quickly, and motivation is fleeting. Keeping your “why” in the forefront of your mind, or writing it down and posting somewhere you will see regularly, will help you keep showing up day in and day out. Remember, change happens from the inside out.
- Start small : The excitement of starting something new can result in taking on too many things at once. Using the example of building a healthy lifestyle, let’s say you decide to work out five days a week and make all of your meals at home. While this is a great goal, if you try to start all of this on day one, you’re likely to be overwhelmed and either struggle or give up altogether. Instead of beginning everything at once, try incorporating just one new change at a time. For example, you could start with moving your body for 15 minutes three times a week. Over the course of a few weeks, increase the frequency to five days a week. Once you are able to work out consistently, start making one daily meal at home and work your way up to more. Taking small, actionable steps over the course of a longer period of time is more sustainable than attempting to change everything at once.
- Plan : It’s often said, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”. While this may not apply to every situation, planning is a key component of success. By the time we reach adulthood, our daily habits are set, and shifting those patterns takes intentional effort. Sticking with the example of building healthy habits, planning can look like deciding in advance what you’re going to do for your workout and when you’re going to do it. You don’t have to have a whole week scheduled at a time, but determining these two things even just one day in advance can help you stay on track. Another way to plan is to figure out what you’re going to eat, buy the food, and schedule when you’re going to prepare it. Not only will this help you stick to your nutrition goals, but also it will keep you from grabbing the quickest thing when you’re hungry. And let’s be honest, the quickest thing is not usually the most nutritious.
