Your guide to sustainable wellness
I’m so glad you’re here! With each newsletter you will receive easily digestible tips regarding fitness, exercise, nutrition, meal prep, and much more!
A healthy lifestyle that produces lasting results is 100% possible, and my goal is to show you how you can achieve just that…it’s probably simpler than you think. I’m here to teach you that wellness doesn’t have to be complicated or boring. You can be excited about moving and fueling your body in ways that are sustainable for your unique journey.
Today’s topic is all about self care. With the hustle and bustle of the holidays looming on the horizon, it’s especially important to be intentional and proactive about taking care of you.
Now, before you run off to get a pedicure, let’s define self care. One of the best definitions I have heard is this : Self care is taking care of your future self. While we certainly must attend to our immediate needs, considering how our choices today will affect us tomorrow is a huge part of self care.
So how do we care for our future selves?
- Set boundaries : Setting boundaries is one of the best ways you can take care of yourself. Decide ahead of time what you are able to commit to, and say “no” to everything else. Honor your limits with your time, finances, and attention. Because we are all in different places, do not compare your limits with others. Erase the narrative in your head that says, “I should be able to do this or that.” Respect where you are today, so that you don’t burn out tomorrow.
- Schedule time to rest : As your calendar fills up with functions and festivities, make sure you block off time to recharge. Identify the things that fill your cup, and make time for them. It is 100% OK to have a day with no plans other than to rest and recharge. When someone asks if you are available, remember “no” is a complete sentence. Time for yourself is just as valuable and necessary as the time you spend with others.
- Care for your body : I may sound like a broken record, but keep scheduling those workouts and making the time to nourish your body with nutrient-dense foods. Running on junk food (or even worse, no food) will zap your energy and leave you feeling less than your best.
- Care for your mind : Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. If you attend therapy, keep up with your regular appointments even when life gets busy. If meditation and/or prayer is part of your routine, continue making time for that. And at the risk of sounding cliche, check in with yourself regularly. Are you stressed, tired, overwhelmed, etc. Do you need to stop for a meal? Do you need to take a nap or ask for help? What can you delegate to someone else? Determine what you need, and then give that to yourself.
These may not be what comes to mind when you hear the term “self care,” but I hope this perspective is helpful. What is your favorite form of self care? I read and respond to all emails, and I’d love to hear from you.
